More Texans Commit to Anti-Horse Slaughter Bill

Houston, TX (ContentDesk) May 24, 2004 -? On May 11, 2004 U. S. Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (D-18-TX) did something that only 6 of her 32 colleagues from Texas had done ? she co-sponsored H.R. 857, The American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act.Vivian Farrell, founder and president of the Houston-based The Fund for Horses expressed her gratitude, and added, "I was particularly pleased to see this not only as her constituent, but also as the president of a horse protection organization based in her constituency."Since then, U. S.

Congressmen Nick Lampson (D-9-TX) and Charles Gonzalez (D-20-TX) signed onto the federal bill that, if enacted, would ban horse slaughter and export for slaughter.Texans for Horses, a group organized last year to battle against state legislation that would have legalized horse slaughter in that state, and now under the mantle of The Fund for Horses, have been just as active at the federal level.
"They have lobbied very hard indeed," said Farrell.
"It is rewarding to see these results."Why are horse slaughter plants still operating in Texas if it is illegal and a majority of Texans clearly do not want it?
Farrell answered, "The foreign-owned horse slaughter plants filed an injunction citing interstate commerce law as soon as they realized that efforts to legalize it here were defeated.
They are still in operation, butchering approximately 1000 horses a week, awaiting the Judge's ruling."She added, "That is why a federal law banning horse slaughter is necessary if we want to stop this industry not only from continuing in Texas but also from setting up shop in other states.
The Senate version of the bill has now been introduced (S.2352).

We therefore call on all Americans who care about horses to contact their Senators and ask them to support this vital legislation.

Horse Training Techniques From The 1800's - What's Old Is New And What's New Is Old

Was he the world's greatest horse trainer of all time? Would his picture be in the horse trainer's Hall Of Fame? Perhaps. His name was Jesse Beery. Before he was twenty he became a world class horse trainer. He was so well known, there were more people who heard of him than didn't. Jesse Beery learned how to train horses almost entirely on his own because there were few people who knew how to train a horse.

Beery's parents discouraged horse training as a career but later okay'd his passion. From then on there was no stopping Beery from achieving greatness. Beery's first inclination to train horses happened when he drove a horse and buggy to a friend's house. As Beery exited the buggy the horse spooked and ran home. During that long walk home Beery was determined to make his horse stay put.

As he worked with his horse he discovered ways to get a horse to do what he wanted. Although nearly killed in training incidents and laughed at from friends and neighbors, Beery soon...

The horse must understand what is required of him and the handler must make it easy to understand. Thus, you must start by getting the horse to move forward in either direction.
After a direction is established then get him moving in the opposite direction.
A round pen is excellent for this purpose. When the horse gets good at moving both directions then it's time to hook a lead rope to his halter and lunge him left and right.

And vice versa for going right. The final result should look like this.

There are a lot of misconceptions when it comes to betting on the horses. Some people believe that it's impossible to profit in horse racing. Some believe that all you need to do is bet the favorites. Still, others believe that the only way to make money is to bet the huge long shots and pray for a miracle. All of these thoughts are false.

You can make money betting on horses, and you don't need to pick favorites all the time or bet on miracle finishes often.

Here is a juicy piece of information for you. The favorite wins the race (thoroughbred racing) about 33% of the time. Therefore, if you simply bet the favorite, you will be losing 67% of the time. Since favorites don't always pay too well, you would end up losing over the long run.

Still, money can be made betting on favorites. Each race is different. In some races, the favorite might be an even money favorite. In others, the favorite might be a 3-1 favorite.

How you bet is just as important...
